Check out Popular Front's Snow Days and you can design your very own snowflake. You use virtual scissors and cut shapes and designs out of a piece of paper. You can then watch your snowflake fall gracefully from the sky along with other frosty creations.

Pre/K & Kindergarten - Printmaking and stockings ~ should be fun!
1st, 2nd, 3rd grade - Pattern mittens!!! They are looking wonderful so far.
4th grade - Shoebox looms are almost done. Looks like we will take them home in two weeks!
5th grade - One-point perspective bedrooms are coming along just fine.
6th grade - Contour line hand drawings. (Continue with them next friday).
7th grade - Wrapping up the tessellations next friday.
8th grade - Research project next Tuesday.

REMINDERS
8TH GRADE - December 22nd please bring in a round christmas ornament to papier mache with tissue paper. Bring anything else you have to decorate it with.

7TH AND 6TH - Blank skateboard deck money is due December 22nd. $13.50!

Grade 3 - Warm/Cool Shape Designs

Students learned their warm and cool colors by tracing circles and using rulers to make geometric shapes.

Students learned what it means to overlap, too!

Grade 4 - Origami & Watercolor

Students used straws to blow watercolor around on their papers to create abstract animals. We used sharpie markers to find hidden animals within their splatters, and then learned origami!

Kindergarten read the story "Where the Wild Things Are"

and made "Wild Things" using black paper and oil pastels.

What would you do if you suddenly received a box via mail, labeled “FRAGILE Contains: Peace”? How would you use it? Would you give it to someone else? Would you sell it? Would you just throw it away? In November, eighth graders at St. Charles Borromeo will be creating their own “Priority Boxes” in Art Class, inspired by New York based artist Franck de Las Mercedes.

"The Priority Boxes" project is a public art series that seeks to provoke thought, to make people reconsider their ability to influence change, communicate through art and make art accessible to people from all walks of life. Each box is the canvas for a unique abstract painting and is dedicated with a “Fragile:" message. The project which started as an initiative to promote peace quickly evolved in to an art movement with boxes containing a wide spectrum of emotions and abstract attributes such as Freedom, Love and Justice. By using a box format painted on the outside, sent by mail, Franck aims to have people interact with a work of art, from the person requesting one, to the very first change of hands at the post office, all the way to its receiver. By holding and observing one, the recipient can consider what the box suggests it contains, realize the fragility of what they are holding, and in that relation become aware or activate their ability to take action and influence change. The boxes must be free, in order to reinforce and remind us that things like peace and hope are not only free but also a priority.

Priority Boxes made by thirty-nine eighth graders will be mailed to a platoon of soldiers with the help of A Soldiers’ Angel, a non-profit organization that provides aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and their families.

Franck de Las Mercedes will be visiting St. Charles Borromeo during two eighth grade art classes on Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 before the shipment of the Priority Boxes.

You will not have art on Tuesday, October 13th due to Teacher In-Service.
- Sketchbook homework is due next week (October 27th).
- The Two-Point Perspective project we were working on in class is due when you return to art class on October 27th. *This is not the small sketchbook activity we were working on as a class. This is the official project that you were supposed to get started on. Due to the field trip on Friday and Teacher In-Service, you will have to work on this independently.
- I have the paper that you need for this project. Come see me for it if you haven’t started your project yet.
- If you have started your project, come see me to get your project to take it home.
-Art projects turned in after the due date will receive a maximum of 50% credit.
- Any work not turned in on time will receive an “I” until the assignment is made up, and will calculate in the grade book as a temporary zero until the work has been handed in.
- Use color pencils for this project. AND A RULER.

My peer Jessica Notis will have her opening reception for her Senior Thesis Exhibition titled POSITIVE ENERGY on April 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Holy Family University Art Gallery, 9801 Frankford Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19114 in the Lower Level of the Education and Technology Center.

The basis of Jessica's exhibit is the concept of Chakras.

Please take time to visit the exhibit, and introduce yourself to the artist. Any student who brings back an exhbition card with the artist's signature on it will earn 5 bonus points.

Extra Credit Art Menu

This list contains independent projects that you may choose to do for extra credit. Each project can earn you up to 10 extra points; I will look at your work and award points based on time, effort, craftsmanship and creativity. There is no limit to how many different projects you may do, as long as you are caught up with all your regular assignments. You may repeat projects as you wish after trying out at least 1 other. Unless otherwise noted, these are individual projects, not pair or group. This is a GREAT opportunity to try something new.

1. Enhanced objects: Create/doodle/draw whatever you want on whatever you want. For example:
Popular cartoons on shoes, drawings on skateboards, painting on a book or binder cover. Projects should be “enhanced” on at least 75% of its surface.

2. Research an upcoming subject: Ask the teacher about up coming projects or themes and do research on the topic. For example: if we are learning about landscapes, then research landscape artists, samples, what kinds of techniques they use, etc. Projects should have explanations, samples, and artists. This information will then be used to help teach the class!

3. Cleaning: Simple, help me with cleaning/scrubbing the classroom!

4. Museum Visit: Visit an art museum! Pick 1 work you liked the best, snap a photo of it (if allowed without the flash) and type a paragraph (5-7 sentences) about what you like about it OR write half a page about your visit: what you saw, did, liked, etc. For either option, be sure to turn in your ticket stub.

5. Analysis Paper: Write a short analysis paper (about 3 pages double spaced 1” margins) on a selected artist OR compare/contrast two artists. Introduce the artist(s), their style and biography, and 1) offer an opinion on their works OR 2) compare how the two artists’ styles differ and/or are similar.

6. Online E-Portfolio: Create an online web page (i.e. blogspot, wikipages, snapfish, etc.) that contains digital photos of your own original artwork).

7. Collage: Create a collage (or photo collage) from famous artworks. You may take personal photos of the artwork, computer printouts, recycled books, etc. to put together a carefully designed piece that is at least 8.5” x 11”. Please limit your image selection from magazines to carefully cut and applied works. It should speak about your personal style.

8. Post cards: Send me a post card (to the school 1704 Bristol Pike Bensalem, PA 19020) from a museum/historical site you visited while out of the city OR create your own postcard design on card stock sized 4.5” x 6.5” and send it through the mail. Your message should be what you liked best about your museum/site visit OR what your postcard design is about.

9. Music Notes: Create a playlist of songs to accompany an art style (graffiti art/body art,
Renaissance, Modern art, etc.), specific artist or culture (Jackson Pollack, Frida Kahlo, Japanese art), or favorite artwork. Your playlist should be burned as an audio CD (not MP3 files) and contain 10-13 songs. Design an envelope or CD cover with the title of the playlist and list of songs & artists. There should be an insert with a short (3-5 sentences) explanation of your music mood and reason for selections.

10. Poem/Song/Rap: Write a poem, song, or rap (with accompanying beat) that is inspired by your favorite work of art. You may record a “demo tape” and/or submit the work in writing. Of course, I will ask you to recite your wonderful work for me. Please include a photo of your selected work with caption of artist, title, and year.

11. The Fictional Plane: Pick a work of fine art (can be a painting, sculpture, drawing, etc.) that show an image of a place or event. You can choose to: 1. Write a short fictional story inspired by it OR 2. Redraw/repaint the place/event and add your own elements to it, such as yourself, animals, fantasy creatures, etc.

12. Not Your Basic T-Shirt: Pretend your favorite artist (painter/sculptor/tattoo artist) is a ROCK STAR. Create tour T-shirts for him/her in his/her unique style. The t-shirt
should LOOK like it reflects their personal and artistic style. Do not use their existing
logos/images. Try to create your own new ones. The t-shirt should be 1 shirt designed front and back or 2 shirts designed on one side. Turn in a REAL t-shirt with the design. *See me for help.

13. Advertisement: Make an advertisement (flyer, brochure, or poster) to promote an upcoming art show of your favorite visual artist (dead or alive). Pretend he/she will have a special museum exhibit in the Bay Area (you pick a location), pick date(s) s/he will be showing, what s/he will show, and when the reception (party to congratulate artist) will be.

14. Art ReDone: Pick a famous painting or drawing that you have seen before. You will mess with the image and make it completely different. You may choose to 1) Pick a famous work from one style and choose an artist from a completely different style to “redo” the painting (have Jackson Pollock redo the Mona Lisa) OR 2) Pick a famous work from one time period and “update” it with another, completely different time period/style (Greek statue redone in Cubism). Draw, paint, or collage your “new” creation. You may ask me for help or advice on choosing the styles/artists and how to go about rendering your new work.

15. Industry Interview: Pick a job in the visual art industry (movies, theatre, graphic design, fashion, interior design, video game design, etc.) and make contact with a person who uses creativity and art in their work. Conduct an interview to find out about their job: how they got there in terms of education, what they do, samples of their work, what they use in their job, what is a typical day, describe their creative process, etc. After the interview, write a 1 page reflection about what you learned and how (or if) it helped you decide what you want to do as a career. You may turn in your interview as a typed transcript (about 3 pages double spaced). After the interview, please remember to thank the person and follow up by sending them a thank you card.

Just a few reminders,

Grades 5 - 8: bring in a 5x7 or a 4x6 inch portrait of yourself in either black/white or color. It will be a picture that you will be drawing lines on, so make sure it's not too important! A class photo is sufficient for this project.

Grades 7 and 8: Please remember to bring a sketchbook or a notebook and a pencil each time you come to art class.

This is a classroom blog run in collaboration with students pre-k through 8 in art class at St. Charles Borromeo and Miss D'Emilio. This website will consist of homework, assignments, extra credit opportunities, art class photos, upcoming art exhibit information, outside opportunities for kids in the arts, and anything that sounds like it would be interesting.

To the right of this page is a list of links that will direct you toward art websites that the students can explore. There is plenty to view, they are informational and a lot of fun. By becoming familiar with these sites, you will be more informed about what art is all about.
